"10th International Civil Engineering Conference"
on 23 & 24 February, 2019

The Institution of Engineers Pakistan, Karachi Centre and NED University of Engineering and Technology jointly organized the 10th International Civil Engineering Conference on 23rd and 24th February-2019, in collaboration with The Asian Civil Engineering Coordinating Council (ACECC), Federation of Engineering Institutions of Islamic Countries (FEIIC), Federation of Engineering Institutions of South & Central Asia (FEISCA), Association of Consulting Engineers of Pakistan (ACEP), Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering & Management Sciences (BUITEMS)-Quetta, Balochistan University of Engineering & Technology – Khuzdar, Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology – Karachi and DHA Suffa University. It is one of the series of the International Conferences on different important topics / themes, held at regular intervals at IEP Karachi Centre. IEP Karachi Centre had earlier successfully organized Nine International Civil Engineering Conferences. This year the theme of the 10th ICEC-2019 is “Technological Transformation of Civil Engineering”.

Inaugural Session:
Saturday the 23rd February, 2019

The Inaugural Session of the Conference was held on Saturday the 23rd February,2019 at IEP Convention Center, Karachi.

The Conference started with recitation of Holy Quran by Engr. Muzammil followed by The National Anthem.

Mr. Saeed Ghani, Minister for Local Government, Public Health Engineering, Rural Development & Katchi Abadies, Government of Sindh was the Chief Guest at the Inaugural Session, while Mr. Muhammad Hassan Bakshi, Chairman, Association of Builders and Developers of Pakistan (ABAD) was the Guest of Honour

Engr. Prof. Dr. Asad-ur-Rehman Khan, Chairman, Civil Engineering Department, NEDUET presented the Conference briefing.
Engr. Sohail Bashir, Chairman IEP Karachi Centre and Chief Organizer of 10th ICEC-2019 presented the welcome address.

The keynote address was presented by Dr. Naveed Anwar, Vice-President, Knowledge Transfer Asia Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand on “How Latest Technological Advancements are Transforming the Civil and Structural Engineering Profession” which was very well appreciated by the participants.

Engr. Prof. Dr. Sarosh Hashmat Lodi, Vice-Chancellor, NED University of Engineering and Technology and Convener 10th International Civil Engineering Conference-2019 presented his address.

Engr. Sohail Bashir, Chairman, IEP Karachi Centre presented the Conference shield to the Chief Guest. Engr. Prof. Abdul Jabbar Sangi Co-Convener, 10th ICEC-2019 presented the vote of thanks and Engr. Faiza Saeed, Council Member, IEP Karachi Centre, conducted the Inaugural Session.

The Conference was spread over 09 technical sessions which were held on Saturday the 23rd February, 2019 and Sunday the 24th February, 2019 as per following details.

International Workshop on ”Role of Youth & Young Professionals in Science Engineering, Technology & Innovation for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)

The Institution of Engineers Pakistan, Karachi Centre and NED University of Engineering & Technology also jointly organized An International Workshop on “Role of Youth & Young Professionals in Science Engineering, Technology & Innovation for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) on Sunday the 24th February, 2019 parallel of 10th International Civil Engineering Conference (ICEC-2019).

On 1st November 2018,an Asia Pacific Workshop, aimed to stimulate and inspire youth professionals in Asia and Pacific to use their science, engineering, technology, and innovation (SETI) capacity to contribute to Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in their respective country was organized by UNESCO Office Jakarta, ICIAR LIPI, and U-INSPIRE Indonesia. At this workshop U-INSPIRE Indonesia was also officially launched. U-INSPIRE is a platform of Youth and Young Professional to work together, networking, and collaborate to use their SETI for DRR and to build resiliency. UNESCO Regional Science Bureau for Asia and Pacific encourages and motivates all participants to establish U-INSPIRE national platform in their country.

IEP Karachi Centre and NEDUET has taken the initiative of formulating similar platform to inspire the Pakistani youth and young professional called U-INSPIRE Pakistan. The session aims to learn from the International Speakers, including from U-INSPIRE Indonesia on the lessons learned, good practice as well as the process of the formulation of U-INSPIRE, understanding the targets of the Sendai Framework for DRR 2015-2030 (SFDRR) and the Young Scientist Roadmap for implementation of SFDRR.

The following sessions were held including the opening session and the following were addressed in the opening session.

Technical Session-4
“Role of Pakistani Youth in DRR”

Conducted by:
Ms. Ghazala Naeem, Consultant. ICG/IOTWMS

A Young Scientist Roadmap for Implementation of SFDRR and Breakout were also discussed in the workshop The U-INSPIRE Indonesia & Pakistan’s Team were participated.

A follow-up (Group presentations) were also held, Ms. Irina Raflians, Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI), Member Science and Technology Advisory Group United Nations Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (STAG UXISDR) was leader of this group presentations.

CLOSING SESSION
The closing session was held after the 9th technical session of the Conference. Engr. Dr. Shamsoon Fareed, Programme Secretary,ICEC-2019 presented the Conference Highlights.

Engr. Sohail Bashir, Chairman, IEP Karachi Centre presented the closing address.

A Keynote Address was presented by Mr. Randolph Langenbach, Conservationtech Consulting, Okland, California, USA on “Recovering the Lost “Moment”: How Timber-Laced Masonry May Hold the Secret to Stopping Pancake Collapse of Concrete Moment Frames (Part-2).

Engr. Prof. Dr. Sarosh Hashmat Lodi, Vice-Chancellor, NED University of Engineering and Technology and Convener 10th International Civil Engineering Conference-2019 presented his address.

IEP Karachi Centre awarded “Chairman IEP Karachi Centre Medal” to the best paper of the Conference.

Selection Committee comprising of Session Chairs decided best paper of the 10th ICEC-2019.

The best paper award was given to the paper “Evaluating Water of Malir River for Detrimental Effects on Vegetables & Ground Water” presented by Dr. Imran Ahmed, Sania Siddiqui, Sara Wajid, Komal Abdullah, Roha Tariq, Nageen Yuuf, Shanza Sattar.

Engr. Prof. Dr. Mir. Shabbar Ali, Dean, Civil Engineering Department, NED University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi presented concluding remarks.

Mr. Rajor Belam, Geologist, also spoke on the occasion.

Engr. M. Farooq Arbi, Vice-Chairman (Civil & Structural), and Secretary, IEP Karachi Centre presented the vote of thanks.

OTHER KEY INFORMATION
150 delegates registered from various organizations.
200 participants/Guest were participated in the inaugural session
Certificates were distributed to ICEC-2019 participants and U-INSPIRE workshop’s participants.
