Theme of the Congress was suggested to be fixed as “Civil Engineering Issues in Development Countries”

Engr. Prof. Faheem Ahsan, Former Dean, NED University of Engineering and Technology, was the Chief Guest at the Inaugural Session.

The Congress started from recitation of Holy Quran by Engr.Anwar ul Haq Siddiqui. Engr. Sohail Bashir, Convener, 5th International Civil Engineering Congress presented the welcome address. Engr.Zaffar Zuberi, Chairman, IEP Karachi Centre presented the presidential address. Engr.Ayaz Mirza, Secretary IEP Karachi Centre presented the vote of thanks, while Engr.Sohail Bashir, Convener conducted the Inaugural Session.

Keynote Address titled “Changes to ACI 318-05 to ACI 318-08 code and implicatin for Building Code for Pakistan” was delivered by Engr. Dr. Shuaib Ahmed, Chief Engineer, American Concrete Institute the keynote address was appreciated very much by the participants.

Engr.Zaffar Zuberi, Chairman, IEP Karachi Centre presented the Congress shield and a memento to the Chief Guest.

The Congress was spread over five technical sessions in two days which are as follows:

1ST TECHNICAL SESSION

1 “High Performance Concrete (HPC), Conception to Realization and future Trends” by Dr.S.P.Shah, Northwestern University, USA

2. “Use of RBC New Material of Construction for Multistory Buildings” by Prof.Mahmood Memon and Prof. Abdul Aziz Ansari, Department of Civil Engineering, QUEST-Nawabshah.

2nd TECHNICAL SESSION

Chaired by: Engr. Dr.Sarosh Hashmat Lodi, Chairman, Civil Engineering Department, NED University of Engineering & Technology,

The following papers were presented:

3. “Innovative Fiber Technology for High Performance Concrete" From Concept to Commercialization. By Dr.A.E.Naaman, University of Michigan, USA.

4. “Production of Foam Concrete Using Indigenous Materials” By Dr.Tayyeb Akram , Lecture Shazim ali Memon, Graduate Student and Mr.Roz ud-Din Nassar National Institute of Transportation, NUEST, Risalpur Cantt.

3RD TECHNICAL SESSION

Chaired by: Engr. Mahmood Memon, Professor Civil Engineering Department, Quaid-e-Awam University of Engineering Science and Technology, Nawabshah.
Co-Chaired by: Engr. M. Idris Khan, General Manager, KESC

4th TECHNICAL SESSION

Chaired by: Engr. Ahmed Pervez Younsi,General Manager, KPT

Co-Chaired by: Engr. Shahid Rafique, Chairman, All Pakistan Contractor Association

7. “Modeling to address Durability considerations: Integration of Experimental and Analytical approaches” by Dr.B.Mobasher, Arizona State University, USA

8. “Experimental Behavior of Connecting Beams in a Laterally loaded shear-well Building” by Prof.Tulsi Das, Assistant Professor- & Prof.Mehmood Memon, QUEST, Nawabshsh

A dinner was arranged on Saturday the 8th December,2007 in honour of Session Chairmen, Co-Chairmen, Authors and Delegate in IEP Hall, 5th Floor, IEP Building.

CLOSING SESSION

A closing session was held after the 5th technical session of the congress. Engr.Zaffar Zuberi, Chairman, IEP Karachi Centre presented the address. Engr. Ayaz Mirza, Secretary IEP Karachi Centre presented the vote of thanks.
